WELCOME TO FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Who are we? We are a community of people who come from incredibly different backgrounds, but we are also a community to whom acceptance means everything. When people visit our worship services or special programs they usually comment about how at home they felt, and how they were challenged. We want to be a family that is big enough to allow you to blend in and investigate the claims of Jesus Christ anonymously, if that’s your choice. But we also want to be a family that fosters closeness and connection through small groups.
We are working together to become the kind of church described in the Bible — a church with teaching from God’s Word that connects with today’s issues, worship that comes from the heart, genuine friendships, constant prayer, and a growing compassion for those who are in need. We want to have the same kind of contagious life the early Christ followers had as they changed their world for Jesus Christ, one life at a time.
It doesn’t matter whether you are a spiritual investigator who’s just beginning a journey toward the truth, or a committed Christian who is looking for a home to put down spiritual roots, you can find a home here at First Christian.
Our Values: When you’re clear about your mission you have to decide what you’ll focus on as you try to advance that mission. To that end we have very important values here at FCC.
We value God’s Word. This refers to Biblical preaching and teaching. We believe anointed biblical teaching is the vehicle for change in an individual’s life and in the life of the church.
We value lost people. Lost people matter to God and ought to matter to us. The Bible says that when one person realizes their need to receive Christ, all of heaven breaks out in a cosmic celebration.
We value change. The church should be relevant and stay true to scripture at the same time. The age-old, timeless, unchanging message of Christianity needs new packaging once in a while to stay relevant to the culture.
We value growth. Christ followers should be genuine, authentic, and have a continuous desire to grow.
We value serving. The church should operate as a unified community of servants, with women and men using the spiritual gifts and abilities God has given them.
We value loving relationships. Loving relationships should saturate every aspect of church life. We should be asking questions like “What is the loving thing to do right now?” and “What would be the loving response to this situation?”
We value small groups. Love gets expressed and life change happens best in small group settings. It’s our desire that everyone have a place where they can know and be known, love and be loved, serve and be served, celebrate and be celebrated.
We value excellence. Excellence honors God and inspires people. God has given His best to us and He deserves the very best we can bring.
We value leadership. Churches should be led by people with leadership gifts. When the leadership gift is used properly it is the one gift that keeps vision clear and values straight. It opens the door for ministry to thrive as everyone uses the gifts God has given them to build up each other.
We value full devotion. Full devotion to Jesus Christ and His cause should be normal for all believers. This includes the concepts of stewardship, servanthood and the understanding that this is a life-long process.
We believe God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He exists in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to reign. The Holy Spirit is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved.
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin”. This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life. Salvation is God’s free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. Baptism by immersion demonstrates our faith and obedience to Jesus Christ – while it also depicts our union with Christ in his Death, Burial, and Resurrection. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into their life by faith. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is that grace and keeping power of God that gives us this security. For more information on what we believe and why we do what we do, we encourage you to attend our Core Classes.
Our worship music is loud, mostly rock and roll, and always about Jesus. We exist so that people far from God will be raised to life in Christ, so we desire each worship experience to show that life is truly found in Jesus. First Christian has been blessed with talented musicians who love Jesus and serve his church through upbeat, contemporary and fresh songs as well as new takes on some older hymns. It’s not entertainment, it a way in which we prepare our hearts and minds to hear the word and to respond to that word.
Also, as a part of our worship, we take communion together and give offerings to support the mission and work of First Christian.
It’s definitely not your grandma’s church, but if the music is too loud, we offer ear plugs at the Connection Point in the lobby. Above all else, we want our worship to be a demonstration of our love for God and continue to point people to him.
